my friend found this in his mums house and gave it to me cos he knows i like moomins, does anyone know where its from/anything about it?
This is really interesting! The information we can gather visually from this piece is that it seems to be drawn in ink, and it is one of 20 copies of this made, so not an original, however only one of 20. The logo at the bottom is interesting, it seems to say HHA, and it looks like the signature (?) on the right is HH. I'm not sure if it could be one of Tove's original illustrations; though her style did change a lot, she always seemed to draw the snouts more round than this and I can't find any early illustrations of hers that match this style. Plus, she tended to add her curly signature into each image she did, and it is absent from this work. Lars Jansson's snouts were more square sometimes, however the eyes usually drawn much bigger than these. I think this might be Snorkmaiden? That is the only moomin this could represent, with the hair, however it doesn't have Snorkmaiden's ankle bracelet, so perhaps an original moomin creation or a concept of a moomin design. I can't find any information on HHA/HH and what it might stand for or who the artist may be. Your best bet is to try and find out where this could've been bought, if it was commissioned by an organisation or charity, or who it is by, though there's not much to go on. If you're feeling keen, you could email Sophia Jansson and ask if she has any idea if this is one of Tove's artworks, no guarantees she or her reps will respond, but the contact information for the people in charge of the Moomin brand can be found here: https://www.moomin.com/en/licensing/. Good luck!
What do you think?
