- This article is about the original Mymble. See Mymble's Daughter for the character later called Mymble.
Mymble (Swedish: Mymlan; Finnish: Mymmeli) is a character appearing in Moominpappa's Memoirs. She is the mother of a large number of children, including Mymble's Daughter, Little My, and Snufkin.
Mymble has a very loose and liberal way of raising her children, allowing them to do whatever they want, so they can grow up just like they turn out. During the events of the book, she bonds with the Joxter, but he is only the father of Snufkin, and not any of the other children.
Supposedly Mymble is based upon an internal slang word among Tove Jansson and her friends which meant to sleep around with people. This is reinforced by her excessive number of children. It is possible the orange hair knot of the female mymbles, as well as their carefree lifestyles, is based upon the contemporary children's literature character Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren.
