The Ancestor (Swedish: Förfadern) is a small furry apelike troll appearing in Moominland Midwinter and Moominvalley in November. It dwells inside the Moomin family's stove, and is thought to be an ancient ancestor of Moomintroll.

- The Ancestor is heavily based on the theory of evolution, a natural phenomenon in which an organism's physiological characteristics change over the course of generations based on natural selection. In the case of the Ancestor specifically, its own species would have evolved into the Moomins at some point in ancient history. Other Moomin Ancestors appear also in the comic strip.
